Mowing Height
The
proper mowing height depends primarily on the type of grass you have.
The general rule of thumb for the Green Industry is to never remove
more than 1/3 of the grass blade in a single mowing.
Mulching grass or remove clippings?
Mulching
can be a controversial topic, however, we are firm believers of
mulching. We don't think that any customer should waste money by
throwing away fertilizer. Cut grass left on the lawn returns 60% of the
nitrogen and 100% of the phosphorus to the soil. It is a common
misconception that grass clippings cause thatch buildup. Actually
mowing only 1/3 of the blade with each mowing produces smaller
clippings, which decompose quicker.
Scalping
Scalping
is when a lawn is allowed to grow too high and then mowed too low. When
too much leaf blade tissue is removed it can cause severe visual
damage. Scalping shocks the grass and growth may slow or stop, limiting
the heartiness of the lawn. A scalped lawn may dry out quickly, or may
develop weed and disease problems.
Why Edge your walks or drives?
Power Edging is one of those things that some people do and some don't. So what are the reasons for it and are they worth it? Edging does a few different things that help both your lawn and walks or drives. First and foremost it protects asphalt or concrete walks and driveways from chipping and cracking. Roots can invade a walk or drive causing cracking and chipping. Edging prevents that by keeping the roots away which makes your walks and drives last longer. Edging will also help protect your lawn at its borders by encouraging people to walk on the
driveway and not on your lawn{which some care about and some don't}. Lastly is the obvious. Edging gives your lawn a much neater and more attractive overall look.
Blades
It
is important to always keep your mower blades sharpened. You may be
required to sharpen your mower’s blades several times during the mowing
season. Mowing with dull blades is like shaving with a dull razor. Dull
blades tear or rip the grass, which weakens the lawn and results in
uneven, discolored grass tips. Blades should be sharpened at a 45º
angle for optimum results.
